Chapter 13

Flashing the Cash

Although I had been coerced into heading down to the police station against my will, it was impossible not to enjoy the drive simply because of Moira’s infectious enthusiasm for everything we passed en route. Since she had only spent a few days in Meli on her previous trip, everything appeared new and exciting to her. As she gushed over landscapes that had become all too familiar, I found myself appreciating them anew through fresh eyes.

As the glistening blue expanse of sea came into view, Moira said wistfully, “Even though the water looks so inviting, I imagine it must be a bit cold to venture in. I doubt that I’ll swim until spring.”

“You’d have it all to yourself by the look of things,” Gordon said.

“You could always brave it on Epiphany,” I suggested. “It’s traditional for the Greeks to hurl themselves in the sea on the 6th of January...”

“It’s quite mad,” Marigold added. “After blessing the water, the priest slings in a gold cross and the young men compete to retrieve it…”

“Oh, what fun. Does the winner get to keep it?” Moira asked.

“No such luck. All he gets for his trouble is a poxy blessing. The priest uses the sanctified water for his house blessing ceremonies,” I explained.

“The local Papas, Andreas, gave our house a traditional blessing once we’d finished the renovations,” Marigold said.

“But he’d run out of sanctified water. We had to settle for the bottled stuff from Lidl,” I chortled.

“But he did bless it in my trifle bowl,” Marigold reminded me.

Silence descended as Gordon and Moira considered Marigold’s words. Even to my ears, the thought of water turning holy after being blessed in a trifle bowl, sounded bizarre, and I’d been there to witness it.

As I drove by a field, Moira exclaimed, “Oh, look at that poor cow. Its legs are tied together and its udder looks as though it’s about to explode.

“I’m afraid that hobbling cows like that is a common practice. It saves the farmer from keeping his herd enclosed…not that you’ll spot many cows in these parts. The Greeks aren’t that big on beef. Pork tends to be the meat of choice; it’s very popular served up as souvlaki.”

“It’s rare to have a steak out that doesn’t taste like old shoe leather, I think they use the wrong cut,” Marigold said. “Nikos never does steak so I guess it mustn’t be an authentic Greek thing.”

“I’m just glad that Gordon’s given up on all that vegetarian nonsense,” Moira laughed. “I can’t wait to try Nikos’ lamb chops, Gordon was raving about them.”

“You know where you are with Nikos’ meat,” I assured her. “You can be sure it’s the genuine article. I heard on the grapevine that a couple of places aren’t above passing off goat as lamb; it’s cheaper.”

“Now, that’s your problem, Victor,” Marigold piped up.

“I wasn’t aware I had one,” I retorted.

“You’re too attached to those chickens of yours.” Expanding her point for the benefit of the Stranges, she explained, “Nikos doesn’t
